Yes. Irish registration plates are governed by S.I. No. 318 of 1992 (as amended). Every plate we print meets those requirements: black characters on a white reflective background, characters no more than 70mm high and 36mm wide with a 10mm stroke width, the full Irish-language county name across the top, and the EU band on the left with twelve gold stars and the IRL identifier in white on blue reflective. Unlike the UK, Irish law does not mandate one specific typeface, but we print in the standard character style used on factory-fitted Irish plates so yours matches the rest of the road and passes NCT without question.

No. We don't require V5/log book for standard road-legal plates, but we recommend you only order plates for vehicles you own.

Because plates are custom-made to your registration we can't accept returns unless the plate is faulty. If anything's wrong, contact us within 7 days and we'll sort it. This doesn't affect your statutory rights.

An Irish registration reads year code, county letter, then sequence number, written with dashes — for example 261-D-123. Since 2013 the year code is the last two digits of the year followed by 1 for January–June or 2 for July–December, so 261 means the first half of 2026. The letter is the county or city of first registration (D for Dublin, C for Cork, G for Galway, and so on), and the final digits are the vehicle's position in that county's registrations for that half-year.

No. Raised gel, 3D and 4D plates, and stickered or tinted plates, do not meet the Irish specification and will fail the NCT. Every plate we print is flat, black on white retroreflective sheet, and road-legal.

No. Unlike the UK, Ireland does not issue personalised or chosen registrations — your registration is assigned when the vehicle is registered and cannot be changed to a custom combination. You can order replacement plates showing your assigned registration, and off-road show plates for display use only.

You can replace the physical plates at any time — lost, damaged, faded or mismatched plates are replaced routinely, and no paperwork is needed. What you cannot change is the registration itself, which stays with the vehicle for its lifetime.

Most Irish cars use either two screws through the plate into the bumper mounts, or double-sided number plate tape. Clean and dry the surface first, line the plate up centrally, and press firmly for around 30 seconds if using tape. Never drill through the characters or the EU band.

Northern Ireland marks use a different system to the Republic: three letters including an I or a Z, followed by up to four digits — for example CIW 1234. They carry no year code, so an NI plate does not tell you the vehicle's age. If you import an NI vehicle to the Republic it is reissued a standard Irish registration and needs new Irish plates.
