When L plates are required
Anyone driving on an Irish learner permit must display L plates on the front and rear of the vehicle for the whole time they are driving, not just during lessons. A learner permit holder also needs a fully licensed driver with them, and the plates need to be visible to traffic in both directions. If you share a car, magnetic plates that come off in seconds are the easiest way to stay compliant without leaving them on when a full licence holder is driving.
Size, colour and placement
An L plate is a red letter L on a white background. The usual plate is around 150mm square with a letter roughly 100mm tall — big enough to read at a glance from behind. Fit one front and one rear where it does not cover your registration plate, lights, indicators or your own view out of the car. A plate propped inside the rear window is fine provided it stays upright and legible.
N plates after you pass
Passing the test does not end the plate requirement. For the first two years on a full licence you are a novice driver and must display N plates — a red N on white, same size and same placement rules. The two-year period runs from the date your first full licence is issued, and it applies even if you have driven for years on a permit beforehand.
Penalties for getting it wrong
Driving without the correct L or N plate carries a fixed charge notice and penalty points, and it is one of the easiest things for a Garda to spot at a checkpoint. It also sits alongside the accompanying-driver rule, so a learner driving unaccompanied without plates can pick up more than one offence in a single stop.
Your registration plate still has to be legal
L plates do not change what is required of the reg plate itself. It still needs black characters on white reflective sheet at the correct character height and spacing, with the Irish county name and EU band.
