Northern Ireland number plates
Northern Ireland runs a different registration system to both Great Britain and the Republic. Here's how NI marks are built, what they do and don't tell you about a car, and what has to happen when one is registered south of the border.

Northern Ireland uses UK-style plates with a yellow rear and white front, so they are not legal on a vehicle registered in the Republic. If you import a car from the North you must register it with Revenue and fit Irish plates — we print those from €17.

How an NI mark is built
A Northern Ireland registration is generally three letters followed by up to four numbers, and the letter group always contains an I or a Z — the two letters never used in the modern GB sequence. The letters were originally allocated to counties and county boroughs, so older marks can still be traced back to where the vehicle was first registered, though the link has weakened as series were reissued centrally.
Why there's no year in the plate
Great Britain moved to an age-identifier format in 2001 and the Republic has carried a year element since 1987. Northern Ireland kept the sequential index-mark system, so an NI plate tells you nothing about when the car was built. That is exactly why NI registrations are traded as a way of taking the visible age off a vehicle — and why buyers should always check the documents rather than the plate.
Driving an NI car in the Republic
An NI-registered vehicle can be driven here on its own plates in the normal course of cross-border motoring. What matters is where the vehicle is registered, not where it is driving: if the vehicle becomes registered in the State, the Irish mark must be displayed from that point on. Colour is the giveaway — NI and GB cars run a white front and yellow rear plate, while Irish plates are white front and rear.
Bringing an NI car south
Importing means registering the vehicle in the State and paying any VRT due, after which an Irish registration mark is assigned. That mark then has to go on plates meeting the official Irish specification: black characters on white reflective sheet, correct character height, stroke and spacing, the county name in Irish above the mark and the EU band with IRL. Having the plates on order for the day the reg arrives saves the car sitting idle.

Why do NI plates have no year on them?

Are Northern Ireland plates legal in the Republic?

An NI-registered vehicle can be driven in the Republic on its NI plates. But once the vehicle is registered in the Republic it must display the Irish registration mark assigned to it, on plates that meet the official Irish specification.
What do I need after importing a car from Northern Ireland?
