Why you can't buy a private reg in Ireland
Irish registrations are allocated when a vehicle is first registered with Revenue, following the year–county–sequence format (for example 261-D-123). Unlike the UK, there is no market for transferring a chosen registration onto your car, and no way to buy letters that spell a name. Any site offering an Irish 'private plate' with custom wording is selling something you can't legally fit on a public road.
What customising a plate actually means here
The legal specification fixes the character style, colours, character height and stroke width, spacing and the EU/IRL band. What's left to you is the plate format that suits your car, the county name printed along the top, and whether you need one plate or a matched front-and-rear pair. Get those right and the plate looks sharp without risking a fail.
Custom styles that will fail an NCT
Tinted or smoked backgrounds, italic or novelty fonts, 3D or 4D gel characters, squeezed spacing, coloured borders and stick-on badges all move the plate outside S.I. No. 318 of 1992. They're the most common reason a plate is pulled up at an NCT centre or checkpoint. If you want that look for a show or a photo shoot, keep it off the road and swap back your legal plates before driving.

Can you get personalised number plates in Ireland?

Not in the way you can in the UK. Ireland does not operate a private or personalised registration scheme — your registration is issued by Revenue when the vehicle is registered and cannot be swapped for a chosen word or name. What you can do is order a well-made replacement plate showing your own registration in the correct legal format.
What about custom fonts, tinted plates or 3D gel letters?
