What counts as a 'show plate'?
A show plate is any plate that doesn't meet Ireland's road-legal standard: different fonts (like 4D, gel, italic), tinted backgrounds, novelty borders or non-standard sizing. They look great at car meets but aren't legal on Irish public roads.
What the law actually requires
Irish number plates must show black characters on a white reflective background, front and rear, at the correct character height (max 70mm) and spacing, with the Irish-language county name and the EU band carrying twelve gold stars and IRL. Anything outside S.I. No. 318 of 1992 risks an NCT failure and a fixed-penalty notice from Gardaí.
The road-legal alternative
Every plate we sell is the proper road-legal version: S.I. 318/1992 specification, white reflective sheet, NCT-ready. Design yours online in 60 seconds and we'll post it the same working day — fitted plates that look sharp and won't land you a fine.
Frequently asked
Are show plates road-legal in Ireland?
+
No. Plates that don't meet the S.I. No. 318 of 1992 requirements — black characters on white reflective sheet, correct sizing and spacing, Irish county name and EU/IRL band — are NOT road-legal in Ireland and can result in a fixed-penalty notice or NCT failure. Use them only at shows, on private property, or for display.
What's the difference between a show plate and a road-legal plate?
+
Show plates can use custom fonts, spacing, colours and styling. Road-legal plates must be black characters on white reflective sheet with the dimensions and layout set out in S.I. No. 318 of 1992. Every plate we sell on this site is the road-legal version.
Do you sell show plates?
+
We currently only sell road-legal Irish number plates — they're what most customers actually need (and what won't get you a fine). If you need a true show plate for a car meet or display, let us know via the contact page.
Can I use show plates if my car is off the road?
+
On private land, yes. The moment a vehicle is on a public road in Ireland it must display road-legal plates with the correct registration.
