How the Irish year code works

Since 2013 every registration carries a three-digit year code: the last two digits of the year, then 1 for a January–June registration or 2 for a July–December registration. That's why you see 251 and 252 plates from 2025, and 261 and 262 from 2026. Vehicles registered before 2013 use a single two-digit code such as 05 or 12.

Getting new plates without the wait

Dealers are at their busiest in January and July, and a plate order can sit for days. Ordering directly means your plate is printed the day you order it and posted by tracked An Post — usually on your driveway inside two working days, and you can track it the whole way.

What we need from you

Just the registration itself: the year code, your county code and your numerals, exactly as they appear on your vehicle registration certificate (VRC). We print what you enter, and the live preview lets you confirm every character before you pay.

Road-legal, every plate

Every plate is printed to the S.I. No. 318 of 1992 specification — black characters on white reflective sheet, correct character height and stroke width, correct spacing, the Irish-language county name along the top and the EU band with IRL on the left. That's what an NCT inspector or a Garda at a checkpoint is looking for.

Frequently asked

When do new reg plates change in Ireland?

+

Twice a year. Cars registered between January and June carry a year code ending in 1 (for example 261), and cars registered between July and December carry a code ending in 2 (for example 262). The changeover is why plate demand spikes in January and July.

What does 261 mean on a number plate?

+

261 means the vehicle was registered in the first half of 2026. The full registration reads year code, county code, then the sequence number — 261-D-123 is the 123rd vehicle registered in Dublin in the first half of 2026.

How quickly can I get new plates?

+

Order before 2pm Monday to Friday and your plates are printed and posted the same working day by tracked post, typically arriving in 1-2 working days anywhere in Ireland.

Do I need both a front and rear plate?

+

Yes. Irish law requires a plate at the front and the rear of the vehicle, both black characters on white reflective sheet. A matched pair is €29.
