When to replace your number plates
Irish plates need replacing when characters become hard to read, the reflective sheet starts peeling or yellowing, or the plate is cracked. NCT inspectors will fail a vehicle with unreadable plates, and Gardaí can issue a fixed-penalty notice for non-compliant plates.
Replacing one plate or both
If only your front or rear is damaged you don't need to replace both — single plates are €17. But if both are showing wear it's usually worth doing a pair (€29) so the fronts and backs match.

Do I need proof of ownership to order replacement plates?

No. We don't require a V5, log book or insurance certificate for standard replacement plates. Only order plates for vehicles you own.
What if my plate is cracked, faded or peeling?

Order a replacement online — enter the same registration and we'll print a fresh pair. Plates that fail an NCT for visibility, peeling or damage can be replaced in 1-2 working days.
Can I get a replacement for just one plate?
