The motorcycle layout
A car plate runs the whole registration along one 520mm line. A bike has nowhere to put that, so the registration is stacked: the year code and county code on the top line, the sequence numerals on the line beneath. The characters keep the same black-on-white retroreflective finish and the same proportions, so the plate stays readable from behind at a glance.
Rear only, and clearly visible
Motorcycles display a plate at the rear and nothing at the front. That single plate has to do all the work, so it needs to be mounted upright and unobstructed — not tucked flat under the tail, not tilted towards the ground, and not hidden behind a top box or a bag. A plate angled out of sight is treated the same as no plate at all.
The mistakes that get riders stopped
Undersized plates, squeezed character spacing, italic or fancy fonts, tinted covers and hand-cut plates are all common on bikes and all outside the specification. They are also easy for a Garda to spot from behind in traffic. If your plate came with the bike second-hand and looks unusually small or tightly spaced, it is worth replacing before it costs you.
Replacing a damaged bike plate
Bike plates take more punishment than car plates: road salt, spray, stone chips and the occasional drop. Once the sheet is crazed or the lacquer is lifting, the reflectivity is gone and it reads poorly at night. A fresh plate is €17 and takes a minute to order — cheaper than a fixed charge notice.
